NRI IEPF Claim: Recovering Indian Shares from Abroad Without Travelling
12 October 2026 · 9 min read
Thousands of NRIs have shares in India that moved to IEPF years after they settled abroad — often inherited from parents, sometimes their own old holdings. The entire claim can be completed without a single trip to India, but the document sequence is unforgiving.
Step 1 — Confirm the holding from abroad
The MCA IEPF portal and company investor pages work from anywhere. Search with the shareholder's name, PAN and old Indian address. If the PAN is inactivated or never linked, that gets fixed as part of the case.
Step 2 — Open the right accounts
Shares must be credited to an NRO demat account (or NRE where applicable) in the claimant's name — never a resident account. Dividends go to the linked NRO bank account. Most major Indian banks open these remotely with video KYC.
Step 3 — Attest documents the correct way
Documents signed outside India generally need an apostille (Hague Convention countries like the USA and UK) or embassy attestation elsewhere. This applies to the indemnity bond, affidavits, power of attorney and NOCs from other heirs. Getting a document notarised locally when the RTA expected an apostille is the most common NRI rejection — confirm the requirement per document before signing anything.
Step 4 — File IEPF-5 and courier the pack
The IEPF-5 is filed online as usual. The physical pack — apostilled documents, PAN, passport, overseas address proof, CML and cancelled NRO cheque — is couriered to the company's nodal officer in India.
Step 5 — Credit, tax and repatriation
Shares land in the NRO demat account and dividends in the NRO bank account. Dividends are taxable in India; sale proceeds can be repatriated up to USD 1 million per financial year with RBI-prescribed documentation. A CA familiar with NRI taxation should confirm your exact position, especially if a tax treaty applies.
Realistic timeline
Seven to twelve months is normal for NRI cases — the claim itself is standard, but apostilles, international couriers and time-zone coordination add weeks at each step.
We run NRI claims end to end from India: we tell you exactly which documents need apostille, receive your pack, and chase the nodal officer and RTA until credit. Video calls are scheduled in your time zone. Share your details below for a free assessment.
