Claiming IEPF Shares When the Share Certificates Are Lost
12 October 2026 · 8 min read
A very common situation: the family knows the shares existed, the IEPF search confirms they were transferred, but the physical certificates were lost years ago — in a house move, a flood, or simply with time. The claim is absolutely possible; it just has one extra stage.
Step 1 — Prove the loss formally
File an FIR or a non-traceable report at the police station and keep certified copies. This document replaces the certificate as proof that the original cannot be produced and protects you if the certificate ever resurfaces.
Step 2 — Apply for a duplicate certificate
The company's RTA issues a duplicate certificate against an indemnity bond on stamp paper, a surety affidavit, the FIR copy and — for most companies — a public notice in one national and one local newspaper. The notice invites objections for a fixed period; the original cutting goes into your application.
Step 3 — Decide the route: duplicate first or claim directly
Where the shares have already moved to IEPF, some companies allow the indemnity and loss documents to be filed together with the IEPF-5 claim pack instead of issuing a paper duplicate first. The right route depends on the company's nodal officer practice — choosing wrongly costs months, so confirm it before filing.
Step 4 — File IEPF-5 with the loss documents
The claim pack goes to the nodal officer with the IEPF-5 acknowledgement, indemnity bond, advance receipt, FIR, newspaper cutting, PAN, Aadhaar, CML and cancelled cheque. The company verifies, reports to the IEPF Authority, and the shares are credited to your demat account.
Timeline and cost
Expect six to ten months end to end. The extra costs over a simple claim are the stamp paper for the indemnity, the newspaper notices and the notarisation. Everything else is the standard IEPF process.
